About

The CAD/CAM Division was established in 1992 at Georgian Technical University, within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. The division is headed by Professor Alexander Sharmazanashvili, PhD, and brings together permanent academic staff and part-time researchers engaged in advanced research and graduate education.

The division offers doctoral (PhD) and Master of Science research programs, with a focus on computer-aided engineering, digital design technologies, and modern manufacturing systems.

The primary research direction of the division is the development of computer-aided process modelling, integrated feature-based design approaches, and software architectures for CAD/CAM systems.

In 1996, the division obtained a license to offer a Master’s program in Computer Science with a specialization in Integrated CAD/CAM Systems. Since then, the program has produced eight generations of master’s graduates and fifteen doctoral dissertations.

The CAD/CAM Division has also participated in international academic initiatives. Within the TEMPUS–TACIS program, the division contributed to the modernization of engineering curricula at Georgian Technical University and developed an updated course in Integrated CAD/CAM Systems in cooperation with Manchester Metropolitan University.

Research teams within the division have been recognized for their software development. In 1999, the division received the First Category Diploma at the national software workshop, SofTEC '99, for the engineering software system Turbo T.

In 2003, with the support of IBM and the Georgian Academy of Sciences, the CATIA Engineering Centre was established based on the CAD/CAM Division.

The division has organized a series of scientific conferences, including ParametricCAD’96–99, and regularly participates in international scientific forums, such as TMCE and ISTC, as well as other engineering and manufacturing conferences.

Alongside academic research, the division has developed several commercial software systems, including SDMS, an SQL-based data management system created for the State Medical Insurance Company (2002), and WallMAKER, a wall-decoration and 3D visualization system developed for Decostone Ltd (2003).
